In India, the right to education for children aged 6 to 14 is a fundamental right, established by the Constitution (Eighty-sixth Amendment) Act, 2002. This right is further enshrined in the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE Act). The RTE Act ensures that every child has access to free and compulsory elementary education in a neighborhood school until the completion of elementary education (classes 1-8). The Act also mandates that government schools provide free education and private schools must reserve 25% of seats for disadvantaged children, with reimbursement from the state. The Act prohibits discrimination based on caste, gender, or economic status in school admissions. The RTE empowers children with the skills and knowledge necessary for a better future. Quality education can help reduce crime and promote a more peaceful society.
